Q. How do I choose the right blend of oils?

A. Essential oils have been used since ancient times for their therapeutic properties. Scents from the oils can stimulate areas of the brain related to mood and oils can be absorbed through the skin. These highly concentrated oils must be treated with respect and used in suitable blends and tiny quantities.

As a fully qualified aromatherapist, I create special blends to help my private clients after a detailed consultation. That blending skill has been brought to the Kemp Aromatherapy Treatment range, ensuring that each product will be beneficial.

My main blends – all available as bath melts and some as oils and creams are:

  • Relaxing and soothing: Egyptian Geranium and Sweet Orange;
  • Vetiver and Sweet Orange; English Lavender;
  • Relaxing and sensual: English Lavender,Ylang Ylang and Rosewood; Rose Geranium, Palma Rose and English Lavender; Patchouli,Ylang Ylang and Mandarin; Truly Roses with Rose Absolute
  • Uplifting: Peppermint and Bergamot (peppermint is physically soothing); Ruby Grapefruit and Rosemary.
  • Balancing and calming: Meditation Blend with Frankincense and Sandalwood; Camomile and Mandarin (ideal for children)

Salt blends

  • Relaxing and sensual: Rosie - rose geranium and rose absolute
  • Soothing: Muscles – ginger, juniper, eucalyptus and Lavender; Peppermint Pick Up – peppermint and bergamot
  • Uplifting: Morning Glory - grapefruit and juniper Peppermint Pick Up – peppermint and bergamot uplifting.
  • Calming and balancing: Goodnight – vetiver, camomile, lavender and
  • Petitigrain; Kids in the Bath – camomile and mandarin
  • Vanessa to add spice blend, amber and mandarin and the other essence ones.

Q. Can you make blends to order?

A. Yes. I can make small quantities of special blends to order to deal with certain problem conditions or simply to match a fragrance you love.

Q. How can I use Kemp Aromatherapy treatments as part of a facial skin care regime?

A. Cleanse, tone, moisturise and treat just as you would with any other skin care range. If you don’t want to change your existing products try massaging a few drops of 100% natural easily-absorbed facial oil into the face and neck at the end of your usual cleansing routine. This is one of the gentlest and simplest ways to look after your skin and encourage growth of healthy new cells. Even oily skins will benefit from the right oil.

Q. What is the full KAT facial regime?

A. Clean - Oil is used in all cleansing creams to dissolve impurities, so it makes sense to use an oil-based cleaner. The “Purrfect” Cleansing Lotion is a semi-solid cleanser that melts as soon as it is massaged into the skin. It’s suitable for all skin types but is especially good for very dry, dehydrated skins and for very delicate or sensitive skins. It contains apricot oil and geranium essential oil and also acts as an exfoliant.

Tone - With Juniper Skin Tonic an excellent skin cleanser, refresher and toner for all skin types. Juniper and witchhazel help to balance problem skin while organic lavender water is soothing.

Moisturise -With the “Purrfect” Face Cream with ylang ylang, lavender and lemon essential oils for normal or combination skin or the “Purrfect” Nourishing Face Cream for dry, dehydrated skin and tired complexions. It contains a luxurious blend of cocoa butter, frankincense, rose absolute and carrot oil. Egyptian Geranium and Sweet Orange moisturiser suits all skin types but is ideal for sensitive dry, damaged and irritated skins. A rich day or night-time cream it contains shea nut butter which helps to protect the skin, improve its suppleness and elasticity and promote skin healing. It also contains sesame seed oil which provides a low factor sun protection and it smells delicious! This is a light, easy to apply cream and is available in bigger bottles as a body lotion for very dry skins.

Treat - Use a drop of Facial Skin Revitaliser on its own or under moisturiser to help brighten the complexion. An excellent moisturising treatment for
even the most sensitive skin. Dry Skin Treatment Oil restores softness and brightness to dry tired skin
on its own or under your usual moisturiser. Rosehip Anti-Wrinkle Oil is a very fine blend based on research into the effect of rosehip oil on dehydrated skin, wrinkles and scarring. Apply a drop around each eye and lips at night.

The “Purrfect” Eye Gel is a must for tired, puffy eyes. Regular use can help reduce fine lines and dark circles.

Q. Can I use essential oils during pregnancy?

A. The advice is to avoid aromatherapy treatment during pregnancy as essential oils are powerful, herbal based substances and too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing. However, my bath melts are blended to ensure the amount of oil used is safe and I and many of my friends have enjoyed an occasional bath with a lavender or chamomile bath melt during our pregnancies. If you have any doubts, consult a medical practitioner or contact me directly.

Q. I have been told not to use aromatherapy products on my baby but I have seen baby massage classes advertised and you produce a bath range for babies. Who should I believe?

A. It would be wrong to use full strength aromatherapy products on a baby or to attempt a massage without expert guidance. However my baby range is blended with extra mild bubble bath and oils to ensure it will do good rather than harm. As my products contain no chemicals, alcohol or sodium laureth sulphate and parabens they are safe on sensitive skins.

Q. How can you ensure your goods are ethically sourced?

A. As all our products our handmade in our own premises under my personal supervision we know that nohing is added to adulterate the product. We have carried out a written audit with all our suppliers of raw ingredients and are now confident that packaging is recycled where possible and recyclable. Our palm oil is supplied by an active member of the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). Cocoa butter and essential oils are sourced for us by a company that subscribes to sustainable and ethical methods. If a harvest fails, we and they would rather withdraw a product than use a less well monitored crop.

Q. Why did you do an ethical audit?

A. We carried out the audit because of increasing pressure from our retail and wholesale customers, who wanted to be sure our products were as good as we could make them. It has been a valuable exercise for us and our suppliers and shows that consumer pressure can work. The more companies who are asked to prove their claims the better – go on ask some of our competitors who have copied our products if they can match our quality and purity.

Q. Why don’t you do an organic range?

A. We do try to source organic oils and raw materials where possible, but as oils come from all parts of the world it is almost impossible to guarantee they would reach acceptable Soil Association standards. We can guarantee organic lavender is some of our products, where stated.

Of course, our ethical policy does ensure we deal with farmers and suppliers who are also doing their best.
